Working with the frontline ambulance service
Lieutenant Commander Chris Wood is working in the South Central Ambulance Service transporting patients around the area in support of the coronavirus response
Chris tells us about his experience working with the NHS 👇
Over a year ago, I volunteered to become a community first responder and completed my training with South Central Ambulance Service.
This allows me to respond to emergency 999 calls in my community, ensuring that patients get the correct care as soon as possible. We also have a response vehicle to provide cover where it is needed most.
The request for support was targeted towards military personnel who have already supported South Central Ambulance Service voluntarily.
To key workers across the country, no matter what role you are in, thank you for continuing to provide key services to your communities. Your courage and dedication is commendable.
I’m working with the South Central Ambulance Service, in the Patient Transport Services team, based out of Portsmouth — alongside military and NHS colleagues.
I feel proud and privileged to be working with a great team of people from the military and ambulance service, all as part of the wider NHS family.
Around 80 people across defence have been activated to support South Central Ambulance Service.
Our main role has been moving COVID patients between hospitals and to their homes, as well as ensuring vulnerable people, and those who require vital services, are safely taken to and from the hospital.
The level of support from the public has been immense. The dedication of the regular NHS workers who I’ve met, looking after some very poorly patients, has been humbling.
