Protecting our nations interest at home and overseas is the calling our servicemen and women answer on a daily basis. The UK Armed Forces represent the very best of Global Britain in action.
Working around the clock, 365 days a year our soldiers, sailors and airmen and women are currently deployed on 35 operations in 30 countries tackling terrorism, preventing conflict and preserving the peace.
A Global Britain is a secure Britain. That’s why in an ever-changing world the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force work alongside our international partners and allies, ensuring our security for the future.
It’s why the Royal Navy make waves securing the seas and our soldiers prepare allies for success by advising, mentoring and teaching. Meanwhile, the Royal Air Force take flight overhead, policing the skies to protect our allies and helping to tackle terrorism in the middle east.
Here are 5 examples of current overseas operations:
Operation KIPION — Gulf and Indian Ocean
The UK has a long-standing maritime presence in the Gulf and the Indian Ocean. The Royal Navy sail the seas preserving and promoting peace and stability in the region, as well as ensuring the safe flow of trade.
Right now, Royal Navy ships are patrolling the region, ensuring the safe passage of British-marked vessels and protecting UK interests.
Operation TORAL — Afghanistan
Since combat operations ended in 2014, British forces and NATO allies have maintained significant resources to Afghanistan with the aim of helping to rebuild and provide ongoing security in the region.
British forces from all three services are stationed in Kabul where they train, advise and assist the Afghans in creating a peaceful Afghanistan so that never again can it become a safe haven for terrorists.
Operation CABRIT — Estonia and Poland
The UK Armed Forces are leading a multinational battlegroup as part of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence in Estonia to enhance Euro-Atlantic security, reassure our allies and deter our adversaries by leading a combat-ready multinational Battlegroup.
British forces also form part of the US-led battlegroup as part of the same NATO presence in Poland.
Operation AZOTIZE — Lithuania
For the past decade, jets from the Royal Air Force have deployed on air policing missions across Europe. Policing the skies to protect our allies.
NATO’s Air Policing Mission is a peacetime defence mission, safeguarding the integrity of the alliance’s airspace. Currently deployed to Lithuania the Typhoon jets are ready to scramble at a moment’s notice.
United Nations
The United Nations have peacekeeping missions deployed around the world, from Syria in the middle east, to Mali in North Africa preventing conflict and caring for those affected by it.
In March, the British Army returned from Operation TRENTON, the four-year UK contribution to the UN mission in South-Sudan. The UK taskforce of around 300 engineers left a lasting impact on the mission through building hospitals, bridges and roads, as well as making the local area safer for civilians affected by the complex conflict there.
In east-Africa, the British Army are training the Somalian National Army on Operation TANGHAM. Their presence there is helping Somalia to become a stable nation and tackle Islamist terrorist group Al-Shabab.
The UK Armed Forces continue to police NATO airspace, protect shipping lanes in the Gulf, play a key role in defeating Daesh — and ultimately keeping Britain safe.
