Somalia’s soldiers pass out from training
In the Horn of Africa, British Army instructors have been training the Somali National Army in the fight against the Islamist terrorist group Al-Shabab. The most recent company of soldiers have passed out of training.
British Army instructors from the Somali National Army Support Team (SST), have been working since May 18 on Op TANGHAM as part of the UK’s mission to Somalia.
The SST delivers 8-week training packages, teaching the Somali National Army soldiers the basics of stability operations.
The syllabus includes patrolling, defensive tactics, marksmanship, vehicle control points, emergency medical skills and basic Counter-IED.
At the conclusion of training, the soldiers are issued with uniforms, personal equipment radios and vehicles to aid them in the fight against Al Shabaab.
The most recent course passed off a company of 119, including 4 officers and 8 female soldiers. Some selected soldiers will go on to receive further training in driving or medical care.
