Royal Navy wife launches her new company today, on Small Business Saturday.

For Lee, married to a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy, this will be her second small business, which she has named Makeover Marketing; she already runs an award-winning bridal makeup and hair business.

Both of her businesses can be taken anywhere and are flexible for her to be able to work around her husband’s work commitments and family. Lee had worked in marketing for 20 years and was on maternity leave when she decided to go freelance, turning to support in the Defence community to help her prepare.

Lee can take her business anywhere — a real benefit when deployments around the nation are likely.

Military charity and media organisation BFBS has been working with a number of small business owners through its online course, Social Media Spouses. The course, now in its third year, is designed to addresses a real need amongst military spouses and partners to obtain the skills they need to find flexible and interesting work that fits around military and family life. It offers detailed training on how to use social media to grow their business, or to find a career in social media.

Lee said:

“Whether you’re a complete newbie or have some experience in social media marketing you’ll get so much out of it. The teaching staff are brilliant. They’re so passionate about social media and staying on top of all the latest developments, so you know you’re getting up-to-the-minute training. The small-group environment is really supportive and friendly.”

Lee’s new business is designed to help organisations with all aspects of their marketing, from strategy and planning to managing their social media and advertising, and copywriting for their websites and email marketing. She loves working with organisations with a military link, like The Milspo Network and Communities Fiji Britain — both opportunities that came from doing the #SMSpouses course.
