Keeping the peace: Upgrading defence in South Sudan
Three weeks into the UK task-force in South Sudan’s Mission to upgrade defences and improve living conditions in Leer, results are already beginning to show.
On 8th April 2019, 30 Royal Engineers and Infantry soldiers from the UK taskforce in South Sudan deployed 140km from Bentiu to the small and remote town of Leer.
Their aim was to improve the lives of those stationed at the base in Leer, by working alongside Ghanaian forces to improve living conditions and better aid the local population.
The task began with vital infrastructural improvements to the camps defences ahead of the rainy season. Construction of 370 metres of walls and 5 protected observation posts along the camp perimeter are already under way, increasing camp safety and security, as well as providing greater support to other UN agencies.
3 weeks into the mission, the taskforce have already had to overcome many challenges. For many of our taskforce, this is their first time deployed in a remote location, working on very difficult ground and with 1,200 locals as their neighbours.
Nevertheless, with strong support from our Ghanaian counterparts as well as some of the locals, the taskforce has commendably overcome every obstacle thrown their way.
For example, with some inventive solutions to the lack of resources and tools, the taskforce has successfully demonstrated best practice for building HESCO walls — a strong military fortification constructed of mesh wire and heavy-duty fabric liner — which will aid flood control and protect local populations.
Despite missing some of the comforts they were used to in the larger town of Bentiu, the Ghanaian forces demonstrated great hospitality in making our taskforce feel as comfortable as possible. The taskforce has gained valuable
insight and experience and strengthened relationships across all levels.
Commander in Leer, Lieutenant Adeney described his learning experiences:
“From being involved in the complex planning in the run up to deployment, to setting up the UK camp and managing engineer tasks, there has been a wide range of different problems to solve and experiences to be gained.”
Lieutenant Adeney also noted the impressive work being produced across the board during the Mission and is looking forward to the following weeks in Leer.
