Who are you and what have you been doing?

“I’m Platoon Sergeant Church from A Company, 2 Royal Anglian.

“Over the past two weeks, soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Anglian Regiment have been tasked with packing over 80,000 helmets here at MOD Donnington.

“The guys have done an absolutely fantastic job we’ve been aiming for around 12,000 helmets a day. We’ve surpassed that number.

“We were given two weeks to carry out this task and the guys have done it in 8 days, which is no small feat.”

What is the process you have been going through?

‘The guys have been packing the helmets, checking for serviceability and making sure they’re good to send out to Ukraine, taking off all the British military markings and anything else that may be on the helmet.”

What does taking part in this mean to you personally?

“These helmets are going to be going to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, what’s happening out in Ukraine at the moment is a tragedy. It hits quite close to home, being infantry soldiers in the British Army, we can relate in some respects, with the previous tours (deployments) that have happened over the last decade.

“It’s good to help the guys and girls out there, this will obviously provide that vital protection that they need against the Russian Army.”

What else have you done in the last 12 months?

“In the past 12 months, the troops and I have just returned from Op NEWCOMBE, which is part of the Peacekeeping mission in Mali, MINUSMA. Before that, we were going through PDT (pre-deployment training) in preparations for Mali, ensuring that we were ready to deploy.”

The 2nd Royal Anglian troops are a Light Mechanised Infantry Battalion. They draw soldiers from across the counties of the East of England and East Midlands including Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Rutland and Lincolnshire.

They are currently the United Kingdom Standby Battalion (UKSB) ready to deploy at short notice to anywhere in the world they are needed.
