Over 140 British Army personnel were deployed to help assist civil authorities in providing flood relief to local communities in West Yorkshire.

We often think of soldiers on operations around the world, countering terrorism or keeping the peace but civil contingency plans exist at home too, meaning our Armed Forces can react to disasters or acts of terror at home in the UK.

The British Army has had a presence on the ground helping the local communities, the Fire Service and the Environment Agency to put up flood defences and sandbagging peoples doorways — helping to reassure the local community.

British Army personnel were deployed to Ilkley and Calderdale in West Yorkshire.

The Met Office issued several amber and yellow weather warnings across the UK with a severe alert for wind and ‘heavy rain’ coming into effect in the north of the country.

With these weather warnings in place, 75 personnel from 4th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland, helped to aid the Environment Agency in constructing barriers and repairing flood defences in Ilkley and Calderdale, West Yorkshire.

There were also an additional 70 Reservists from 4th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, who were also tasked with providing support where and when required.
