14 nations, 58 aircraft, 15 ships, 3 submarines and nearly 4,000 troops
The UK has hosted its bi-annual exercise called Joint Warrior in Scotland and Northern England. Nearly 4,000 troops from 12 NATO countries, as well as Japan and the United Arab Emirates, took part in Europe’s largest military exercise.
Exercise Joint Warrior is the largest military exercise in Europe, bringing together the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force, and the British Army, as well as forces from other nations.
Allies were able to sharpen their understanding of how other countries operate, work collectively to achieve results and prepare to deter any growing aggression.
The multinational exercise aims to increase the UK’s capabilities with its allies, which saw NATO and its partners working together. These included:
- Belgium 🇧🇪
- Canada 🇨🇦
- Denmark 🇩🇰
- France 🇫🇷
- Germany 🇩🇪
- Latvia 🇱🇻
- Netherlands 🇳🇱
- Norway 🇳🇴
- Spain 🇪🇸
- Turkey 🇹🇷
- United Kingdom 🇬🇧
- United States 🇺🇸
- Japan 🇯🇵
- United Arab Emirates 🇦🇪
Exercise Joint Warrior is held twice a year, in spring and autumn.
The exercise not only allows participating units to hone their specialist roles within a larger war-style setting — it also helps foster vital links between the UK, NATO, and other allied militaries.
This massive multinational exercise involves warships, helicopters, marines, pilots and their supporting roles from the UK, NATO and allied forces.
As part of Exercise Joint Warrior, British and French warships put their skills to the test off the coast of Scotland in the naval exercise, Griffin Strike.
Griffin Strike marks the full operating capability of the maritime elements of the Combined Joint Expeditionary Force (CJEF).
Back in 2010, the Anglo-French CJEF was designed to deter any threats that damage any of the mutual interests the UK and France have.
The Joint Expeditionary Force works to NATO standard, incorporating NATO procedures and tactics. This enables CJEF to be readily deployable in support of NATO operations.
As NATO celebrates its 70th birthday, Exercise Joint Warrior demonstrates what can be achieved by working together within the alliance.
